I’ve watched Lutnick. My sense is that he’s just a loose cannon. He states one thing indicating wiggle room that gets Canadian hopes up then behind closed doors Trump redirects this puppet back on Trump’s hardline. Ford suspended Ontario’s surcharge on electricity because Lutnick indicated the administration would negotiate in good faith. Well, I now fear that Ford is heading into a similar “Zelensky” trap. So my advice to Premier Ford is to cancel his trip to Washington, indicate he will negotiate a deal only if and when Trump shows respect for the people of Ontario and the government which they democratically elected. Oh, and I forgot one other thing Premier Ford, flip the switch to OFF!

Who really believes Canada alone has the military capability to defend our sovereignty if the unthinkable were to happen? And now that Trump has walked American NATO leadership back, do you really think European NATO countries will be interested in preserving Canada’s territorial integrity? Even our historical motherland Britain hasn’t given any verbal support to counteract Trump’s continual 51st state comments. No, with all due respect, I fear we are left alone with a military deserving of much more government attention and investment.

Only the USA, Great Britain, and France have nuclear capability within NATO but within this organization there is the concept of nuclear sharing. Part of that sharing agreement is the storing of nuclear weapons on the territory of those members who have not developed this capability. The Canadian government would need to request this sharing option but US Congress would have to agree to it. Not much chance Canada would be able to argue for these weapons to secure our Arctic sovereignty when Trump has his eyes on it’s resources and the Northwest Passage.

This is not a Trump created issue. It’s a long standing Democratic Governor, Gretchen Witmer’s promise to her constituents to force Enbridge to stabilize this old pipeline or Michigan will close it down. Enbridge hasn’t done much to alleviate the State’s historical environmental concerns about Line 5.
I fear that Ontario’s propane prices will soar if this legal action succeeds.

Some facts to consider. This would not be spent fuel bundles, but low and intermediate waste. Basically the waste from doing maintenance. PPE, removed parts, resins etc.
Do you know that there have been radioactive shipments on the road every day in Ontario, for the last ~50 years. From GTA, Bruce County, and Chalk River in all kinds of traffic and weather. If you didn’t know that, it’s because of the exemplary transportation safety record of the industry.
Hwy 17 has different challenges but, the point is these drivers are held to a higher standard so while you’ll see a commercial tractor trailer trying to make that run before the road closes, drivers of radioactive shipments will not be tasked to take those risks. Not to downplay challenges but these are not run of the mill shipments, they are regulated by both MTO and the nuclear regulator.

About the Trump Presidency, I’m waiting 12 months from Inauguration Day, January 20 2025, to actually see the economic fallout for Algoma Steel, the state of our city’s and Canada’s economy, the inflation rate in Canada and the strength of the NATO alliance before weighing in on the Trump effect. But I’m currently very worried. Stay tuned.

Pointblank, we need your financial expertise in the next council, and all the rest of you who complain over and over through your phones, please get out on the hustings, run for election, we obviously need your expertise to make our city great again.

Doug Bradford is a Sault artistic treasure and his daughter Cindy is equally artistically talented although Doug modestly would probably say she surpasses him. You must see their works at the new Sault Legion building to appreciate the gift this family has given to our city and it’s military history.

This was a very interesting letter. As an old man like President Biden, I am beyond my best before date. And I don’t really understand all the issues here as I don’t live in the city but I once did and I used the Y for many years. Perhaps to save expenses with your YMCA it might be financially downsized into a few important requirements for youth. Perhaps it could be kept operational as an expanded day care facility with more spaces. Also kids need direction today as they always have. The building is perfect for a youth sports centre utilizing the gym facilities. Operational costs could be greatly reduced by mothballing the operation of the pool since there’s a great facility already in existence with the John Rhodes Community Centre. Perhaps extra space might be rented out for community groups such as Tai Chi, ethnic cultural centres, martial arts clubs and so on.
In short the building offers opportunities for those who have better ideas to bring forward than mine.
