WATCH: This is why postal workers believe they deserve a big pay raise

Jim Gallant, a veteran negotiator for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, was a guest on the latest episode of our 'Inside the Village' podcast

The ongoing Canada Post strike is approaching the four-week mark — and the postal service says it doesn't see an end anytime soon

In its latest proposal to the company, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said it is willing to accept a lower wage increase than previously demanded. But the two sides remain far apart on much more than pay stubs. Key sticking points include job security, weekend deliveries and the use of part-time workers.

Not surprisingly, a lot of frustrated Canadians have criticized mail carriers for walking off the job at the height of the holiday season. And as each day passes, the Trudeau government faces mounting pressure to end the standoff with back-to-work legislation.

Jim Gallant, a veteran negotiator for the postal union, was a guest on the latest episode of our Inside the Village podcast. He explained why he believes 55,000 striking workers deserve a significant raise — despite the massive financial losses Canada Post has incurred in recent years.

Did the union "cancel Christmas," as some have complained? We ask him that, too.
