The roller rink is part of Union Winter being offered at the downtown train station.

Union Station is setting the wheels in motion for its second annual Roller Express as part of its holiday celebrations.

Set up in the station's TD West Carriageway, the elevated rink offers 5,500 sq. ft. of roller-skating surface.

The skating trail leads into the carriageway tunnel which organizers said will be animated with lights for a "fun retro vibe."

Roller skates are free to rent at the TD sponsored event. Free roller-skating lessons and activities such as DJ skate nights, roller dance performances and 19+ events will also be hosted at Union Station.

The rink opens Friday and will remain open every day until Feb. 2, with the exception of Dec. 24, 25 and 26.

Skaters must register at the Roller Express website before they hit the rink.

Children 12 and under must wear full protective gear — helmet, elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards — and must be supervised by an adult.

The TD West Carriageway, a newly named space at the station, is on the lower level near the Union Food Court. The space was originally used as access for carriage pickups and drop-offs at the nearly 100-year-old station.

As part of the station revitalization project the carriageway has been now features a glass roof that offers views of the surrounding area and the iconic CN Tower.

Also this week, a seasonal singing group known as the Metrolinx carollers returns to Union Station.

Beginning Wednesday, and continuing on consecutive Wednesdays throughout December, morning commuters will be treated to "holly jolly tunes" and are encouraged to donate in support of United Way.
