The TTC is urging drivers to be mindful when parking on roads with streetcar tracks and avoid blocking transit service.
Amid the cleanup from the multiple winter storms the city saw recently, snow has accumulated in all kinds of places, especially along streets.
The city said snow removal may take up to three weeks, but in the meantime, sharing of the road has become an issue.
Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday there were 23 incidents of cars parked on major streets against snowbanks that blocked streetcar tracks. This caused delays, diversions and inconvenience for hundreds of riders, the transit agency said on social media.
The day prior, the TTC said it received hundreds of reports since the weekend storm about cars blocking tracks, adding that parking against a snowbank is a risk.
"If this happens you will be tagged and towed by the city as quickly as possible," the TTC said on X.
Street parking is currently prohibited on most major roads in the downtown core as the city continues its snow-removal effort. The fine for parking on a designated snow route is $200.
Mayor Olivia Chow also took to X to comment on the blocking of streetcars.
"Like many of you, I am sick of the snow. As the city and residents dig out, we must look out for one another. Yet, I spotted this on my way to City Hall today," Chow said.
"Drivers: do not park on snow routes, including all roads with streetcars. You block traffic and make it difficult for crews to complete their work," the mayor added.
Residents across the city have also been posting about this issue over the past week.
On Monday, a user posted on Reddit about a vehicle on Gerrard Street East, which they claimed held back streetcars and buses for more than 30 minutes.
Another user posted to Reddit on Tuesday, this time showing a King Street East streetcar halted just past Parliament Street.
On Wednesday, a Toronto police cruiser was photographed seeimingly blocking a streetcar on Dundas Street West, just past Bathurst Street.
"On a side note, there is a Tims nearby," the user quipped.
