Toronto subway riders may face a headache today as a portion of Line 1 has been closed for maintenance.
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) said subway service on Line 1 (Yonge-University) between St. Clair and York Mills stations will be replaced with shuttle buses while crews execute planned track work.
Regular subway service will resume on Sunday at 8 a.m.
The closure is one of several shutdowns affecting various sections of the subway system in recent months due to scheduled maintenance.
While the TTC has said its crews complete most subway maintenance after transit services end each night, the TTC said it still requires weekend closures for infrastructure and state-of-good-repair work.
The TTC has asked for a $2.82 billion operating budget in 2025 — a $300 million hike from last year — to help increase service on a system facing a significant repair backlog while also working to get ridership back to pre-pandemic levels.
Under the proposed budget plan, riders won’t see a fare increase for the second year in a row. Earlier this month, Mayor Olivia Chow said a fare increase will not come because Toronto already has "an affordability crisis.”
TTC fares were last hiked by 10 cents in 2023.
