Another weekend, another subway closure — although TTC officials have said it will be for the best in the long run.

Beginning at 11 p.m. on Friday, there will be no subway service on the portion of Line 1 (Yonge-University) between St. George and Lawrence West stations.

The TTC said the closure will allow for rail replacement work as part of the transit agency's state-of-good-repair program.

During this weekend's shutdown, a frequent shuttle bus will run, stopping at each station along the route, the transit agency said.

Subway service will resume as scheduled on the morning of Monday, Jan. 27.

While the TTC said it does most subway maintenance after transit service ends each night, it requires weekend and early weeknight closures to complete infrastructure and state-of-good-repair work.

In fact, the transit service is planning for full weekend subway line closures across more than half of the weekends in 2025 in order to complete a backlog of repair work.

Other TTC alerts

Dupont Station will be closed this weekend, although all other subway stations will remain open for customers to load Presto cards, purchase tickets and connect to surface routes.

Three station entrances will also be closed across the subway system, namely Kendal Avenue at Spadina Station, Heath Street at St. Clair West Station and Viewmount Avenue at Glencairn Station.

The closure this weekend will be followed by early nightly subway closures between St. George and St. Andrew through the coming week, from Jan. 27 to Jan. 31.

Service will end nightly at 11 p.m. for track work and station upgrades. Shuttle buses will run. Museum, Queen’s Park and St. Patrick stations will be closed during the shutdown hours.

The TTC said customers travelling downtown from Jan. 27 to Jan. 31 will have two options to connect to stations on the Yonge side of Line 1. First, travellers can change to an eastbound Line 2 train at St George Station and head to Bloor-Yonge Station for the Yonge side of Line 1. Alternatively, TTC riders can take any eastbound streetcar from Queen’s Park, St. Patrick, Osgoode and St. Andrew stations.

The TTC will be running extra streetcar service to account for an influx of travellers impacted by the subway closure.
