Rosedale Valley Road will be closed this weekend so construction crews can safely remove temporary supports under the new Glen Road Pedestrian Bridge.

The closure is expected to begin on Friday evening and will last until Sunday night, the city says.

The multi-use pedestrian trail that runs beside the road will also be closed as a result of the construction.

The new bridge, which connects the Sherbourne subway station to the southern edge of Rosedale, will replace one built in 1973. It was demolished in 2023 after it was found to have deteriorated. There has been a bridge on the site since 1888.

The Glen Road Pedestrian Bridge had been closed for construction since March 2022

Construction has created a long-standing traffic bottleneck on Bloor Street East between Parliament and Sherbourne streets.

An inspection of the former bridge found serious issues with corrosion. In 2017, engineers estimated its remaining life expectancy was five to 10 years.

The city said the Glen Road Pedestrian Bridge is expected to open in the spring of 2025.
