Drivers are being warned to anticipate a shift in lanes on the Don Valley Parkway under the Eastern Avenue Bridge in the coming weeks — a new configuration that will stay in place for the next two years.
The city said a contractor will occupy the southbound shoulder of the DVP under the bridge until the end of 2026.
Workers need to access the bridge pier on the west side of the DVP as well as the underside of the structure as part of a bridge rehabilitation project.
The work involves bringing the bridge up to current safety standards and the creation of a multi-use trail on the bridge that will be separated from vehicle lanes by a concrete barrier with steel railing.
The southbound DVP lanes under the bridge will be slightly shifted to accommodate use of the shoulder, the city said.
To put the lanes into their new temporary configuration, the contractor will be doing overnight work between Sunday, Dec. 1 and Friday, Dec. 6.
Work will include placing traffic control signs, temporary line painting and putting temporary concrete barriers along the shoulder, according to the city.
Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., the DVP southbound will be down to one lane from Dundas Street to south of Eastern Avenue.
The DVP off-ramp at Richmond Street will also be closed overnight. During the day, traffic operation will resume as normal.
The city is rehabilitating four bridges in the area:
- Eastern Avenue Bridge
- Don Valley Parkway Off Ramp over Don River
- Richmond Street East Bridge over King Street East
- Adelaide Street Bridge over King Street East
