It could be a messy morning commute for motorists as Toronto is expected to see some of the first significant snowfall of the season.

Environment Canada has issued a winter travel advisory for Toronto for Wednesday, warning of accumulations near 5 cm and reduced visibility at times for drivers.

A low pressure system will bring snow beginning Wednesday morning. The snow is expected to taper off by the evening, the weather agency said.

Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly, the advisory says, warning there may be "significant impact" on rush hour traffic.

Environment Canada's tips included slowing down when driving in slippery conditions.

"If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance."
