A new art installation, dedicated to trailblazers of the Professional Women's Hockey League's (PWHL), is now on display at Toronto's Eaton Centre as the Toronto Sceptres team gets set for puck drop on Saturday.
Canadian artist Briony Douglas used hockey sticks from the PWHL's first season to construct the piece, called 'The Inaugural Six.' The sculpture looks like a giant hockey goalie mask.
The installation was unveiled this week with several of the league's players, and Toronto Sceptres team members, in attendance.
Meanwhile the City of Toronto will raise the Sceptres flag at city hall today to celebrate the team's home opener against the Boston Fleet this weekend. Fans are invited to join the special ceremony at noon.
The event will feature remarks from Mayor Olivia Chow and appearances by Sceptres team captain Blayre Turnbull, assistant captains Renata Fast and Jocelyne Larocque and head coach Troy Ryan, according to a city release.
The six teams in the PWHL played their inaugural season last year without choosing team names.
The Toronto team was reintroduced in September as the Sceptres with a regal-looking logo.
The team wears light blue uniforms that align with the existing Toronto sports teams, the Maple Leafs, Blue Jays and Toronto Argonauts.
The Boston and Toronto PWHL teams will face off at the Coca-Cola Coliseum at Exhibition Place on Saturday at 2 p.m.
