Seen around the city: Toronto-based architectural magazine launches new issue

The Site Magazine examines “new ways of looking at currencies” and community

The Site Magazine held a launch party for its latest issue in Toronto’s Dundas West neighbourhood Friday night.

Founded in 2015, The Site is published by a crew of volunteers who work in the architecture and urbanism space. The magazine is published in Toronto but has an international scope that includes work commissioned by writers and designers from across the world.

The current issue, titled Common Currencies, uses an architectural and design lens to examine how economic systems — both global and local — shape values, buildings and public spaces.

That includes looking at “new ways of doing commerce,” Nicky Bruun-Meyer, an architect and one of the magazine’s co-publishers, told TorontoToday. “Not necessarily anti-capitalism, but new ways of looking at currencies and what community is about.”

Because of The Site’s Toronto roots, the magazine often features contributions from recent architecture grads from the University of Toronto and University of Waterloo.

This issue features a review of John Lorinc’s recent book “Dream States: Smart Cities, Technology, and the Pursuit of Urban Utopias.”

The launch event was held at Underscore Projects, a gallery and studio space that Bruun-Meyer also uses for her architectural practice.

The Site Magazine can be purchased at independent retailers like Type Books, Book City and Presse Internationale, as well as at Indigo locations and online.
