All lines at Pearson will eventually have new CT X-ray scanners, the federal security authority says

A new scanner that lets passengers through security without having to remove numerous items from their carry-on luggage is now in place at Pearson Airport and more are on the way.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) said Wednesday its Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray technology is now up and running on one line at the Terminal 1 international checkpoint, with more scanners to be delivered in 2025.

The technology uses three-dimensional rotatable images that enhance screening officers' ability to detect "explosives and other threat items," CATSA said in a release.

Passengers boarding a plane will no longer have to remove permitted liquids, aerosols and gels (100 ml or less), medical devices or large electronics — including laptops — from their carry-on luggage while being screened.

The security authority called the move good news for travellers, who could expect an "elevated security screening experience."

The first device was installed at Vancouver International Airport earlier this year, as part of a national deployment program that will bring the CT X-ray technology to several airports over the next few years. Scanners are currently in place at Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary airports.

CATSA said travellers would eventually see the new devices on all screening lines at Pearson.

"We know innovations in technology help enhance passenger experience," said Khalil Lamrabet, Toronto Pearson's Chief Operating Officer.

"With this new equipment, travellers will be able to move through security screening in a faster, more efficient way. We are confident this will create a smoother journey for our travellers."
