The provincial government is investing over $2 million to build supportive housing for Indigenous men at risk of homelessness.

Located at 230 Coxwell Ave., the four-storey apartment building contains 20 supportive housing units and is located near transit, community centres, grocery stores and employment opportunities.

In a news release published Friday, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said Ontario is providing $1.16 million through the Indigenous Supportive Housing Program (ISHP).

The province is also partnering with the federal government to invest $1.4 million through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative.

“Our government’s housing plan is about creating more homes for the people of Ontario, including supportive housing that is critical to the well-being of both residents and the community,” said Associate Housing Minister Vijay Thanigasalam. "This investment supports a project that will provide safe and accessible housing for Indigenous Peoples, as well as connection to opportunities in the community."

On top of funding for this project, the Ontario government is investing an additional $202 million each year in two homeless prevention programs — the Homelessness Prevention Program and the ISHP — bringing the province's annual investment to approximately $700 million.

The City of Toronto is included in this $700 million figure, receiving over $217 million through the Homeless Prevention Program in the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

Mayor Olivia Chow said the city is "committed to addressing the housing and homelessness crises that we know are affecting too many people including our city’s Indigenous residents."

"The impact this project at 230 Coxwell Ave. will have on Indigenous men seeking a better future is immeasurable," she said.
