To honour National Housing Day, the Toronto Public Library (TPL) is screening a documentary that explores the struggle of Toronto renters as they confront the threat of displacement from foreign-owned developers.
Charlotte's Castle was produced in partnership with TVO and Cave 7 Productions and is being presented in association with Homeless Connect Toronto.
The film tells the story of residents of Spadina Gardens. Squeezed by skyrocketing real estate prices, tenants in the historic upscale rental building band together to fight for their homes.
"Through personal stories and on-the-ground footage, Charlotte's Castle highlights the harsh realities of renovations and the resilience of those determined to protect their community and maintain affordable housing," TPL said in a release.
A panel discussion moderated by Nam Kiwanuka, host of TVO's Agenda in the Summer, will follow the screening.
Panellists include David Reycraft, a senior director at Eva's Initiatives, Tim Maxwell, a community legal worker at Kensington-Bellwoods Community Legal Clinic and Flynn Daunt, a community organizer with Keele Area Tenant Committee.
The Wednesday, Nov. 20 screening and Q&A runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Toronto Reference Library (Beaton Hall), 789 Yonge St.
