A total of 4,019 voters cast their ballots in advance voting this past weekend in the Don Valley West byelection, the city says.
Turnout for advance voting was 1,877 voters on Saturday and 2,142 voters on Sunday.
The city council seat was left vacant after the death of veteran politician Jaye Robinson in May.
The race's frontrunners are Anthony Furey, a former Toronto Sun columnist who placed fourth in last year's mayoral race, and Rachel Chernos Lin, the Toronto District School Board trustee for the ward.
Two other candidates, Dhruv Jain and Evan Sambasivam, suspended their campaigns last week and are throwing their support behind Chernos Lin, something former Ontario premier and ex-MPP for the area Kathleen Wynne had reportedly been urging them to do for over a month in order to avoid a centrist vote split that would benefit Furey, a right-wing candidate.
However, because of their late-in-the-game decisions to drop out, Jain and Sambasivam's name will still appear on the ballot.
There are also another 12 contestants vying for the council seat.
Election day is Monday, Nov. 4 when 49 voting places will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the city said, noting eligible voters choosing to vote on election day must do so at their assigned voting place.
Polling location details are available at www.toronto.ca/MyVote.
To receive a ballot on election day, a voter needs to present identification that shows their name and qualifying Ward 15, Don Valley West address.
Voters are encouraged to bring their voter information card with them. The cards were mailed to people who were on the voters’ list by Oct. 10, 2024, according to the city.
Eligible voters with acceptable identification who are not on the voters’ list can be added to the list at the voting place on election day, the city said.
Results are expected around 9 p.m. Monday evening.
