Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow congratulated Mark Carney on winning the Liberal Party’s leadership race and said she looks forward to working together "during turbulent times ahead."
Carney on Sunday won the leadership race in a landslide, setting him up to be the country’s 24th prime minister.
In a statement, Chow said she is hopeful Carney will help Toronto build more affordable homes, feed more kids with school food programs and tackle transit and traffic congestion.
"During turbulent times ahead caused by a senseless trade war, the City of Toronto stands ready to partner with the federal government to protect workers and businesses," Chow said, referencing U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods.
"Now is the time for a Team Canada approach," she said.
Chow also thanked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "for his service to our country."
She said Trudeau worked with the Toronto officials to make the city more affordable, safer and more caring.
"We partnered to build homes, develop the waterfront, order new subway cars, provide affordable early childhood education and nutritious food for children," Chow boasted.
On Sunday, Carney won over 151,000 Liberals votes in the leadership race with about 86 per cent of support.
Carney defeated former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former government house leader Karina Gould and former MP Frank Baylis.
He is not an elected Member of Parliament and does not have a seat in the House. It is so far unclear where Carney will run as an MP in the next election.
Trudeau will step down as prime minister and give Carney's name to the Governor General as his replacement.
