In her first election as captain of the Ontario New Democrats, NDP Leader Marit Stiles retained her Davenport seat, led her party to its third consecutive term as the official Opposition at Queen’s Park and kept downtown Toronto orange.
Along with Davenport, the New Democrats retained the other five downtown ridings in TorontoToday’s coverage area.
Four incumbent NDP MPPs were re-elected:
- Peter Tabuns in Toronto—Danforth;
- Chris Glover in Spadina—Fort York;
- Kristyn Wong-Tam in Toronto Centre; and
- Jessica Bell in University—Rosedale.
In Parkdale—High Park, rookie candidate Alexa Gilmour won the seat previously held by former NDP MPP Bhutilla Karpoche.
Elsewhere in Toronto, the Ontario Liberal Party picked up three new seats.
Former journalist Stephanie Smyth flipped Toronto—St. Paul's for the Liberals, defeating NDP incumbent Jill Andrew, who represented the riding since 2018.
In Don Valley North, Liberal candidate Jonathan Tsao was victorious. The seat was formerly held by Independent incumbent Vincent Ke, who resigned from the PC Party caucus in 2023 amid allegations he was involved in election meddling by the Chinese government, which he denies.
Liberal candidate Lee Fairclough swiped another formerly PC Party seat by defeating PC incumbent Christine Hogarth in Etobicoke—Lakeshore.
Hogarth was a staunch opponent of the Bloor Street West bike lanes, which PC Leader Doug Ford has pledged to remove.
During his victory speech, Ford said he would “bring back sanity” to bike lane policy.
Ford’s PC Party won a third majority government with a projected 81 seats, as of 11 p.m. Thursday evening. The NDP was forecast to win 25 seats, the Liberals 13, the Green Party two, and one Independent was victorious.
