Editor's note: Welcome to TorontoToday

Village Media’s newest community is the city’s downtown core

Hello Toronto!

Allison Smith here, founding editor of TorontoToday. I want to welcome you to TorontoToday.ca, the new hyperlocal news source dedicated to serving the downtown neighbourhoods of Canada’s largest city.

Launched this morning, TorontoToday is part of Village Media’s network of local news websites, which spans more than two dozen Ontario communities.

We intend to treat Toronto’s downtown core like a community, too. The geographical boundaries we are zeroing in on span from the Waterfront in the south to Dupont Street to the north, and from High Park and the Junction in the west end to the Don Valley River to the east.

We are taking a boots-on-the-ground approach to covering the people, places, events and information that make downtown Toronto such a unique and vibrant community.

I've called downtown Toronto home for 16 years and am excited to turn my journalistic eye on the city. There is so much that goes unreported and TorontoToday is going to change that.

I’d like to introduce you to the other members of our nine-person editorial team. Eva Zhu and Sarah Do Couto are our deputy editors. They were previously reporters at CBC and Global News, respectively.

Aidan Chamandy — formerly of The Trillium — is our City Hall reporter. Also on our reporting team are Alex Flood, who joins us from SooToday.com; Alex Goudge, previously an arts and culture journalist at The Canadian Press; and Kathryn Mannie, a former national online journalist at Global News.

You can sign up for our morning newsletter The Stir and our afternoon newsletter The Tone. Have a news tip? Send it to [email protected]

Happy reading,

Allison
