UPDATE: Power was restored to the area around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Toronto Hydro.

A power outage affected thousands of residents and workers in downtown Toronto's financial district Wednesday afternoon.

Toronto Hydro said the outage was due to a loss of supply. It is working with Hydro One to restore electricity.

"Our crews are on-site at John Transmission Station investigating the cause and we’re working together to restore power as safely and quickly as possible," Toronto Hydro said in a social media post.

The area affected appears to be south of Queen Street West down to Front Street, and from Bay Street west to Spadina Avenue.

Toronto Hydro's outage map indicates the outage started at around 1:30 p.m. and gave an estimated time of restoration at around 5:30 p.m. Up to 5,000 customers are affected.

Posts on social media suggested people were stuck on upper floors of high rises because elevators were not operating.

However, as of around 2:30 p.m., some indicated power had already come back on in their buildings.
