Toronto's St. Joseph’s Health Centre lost heat and hot water on Friday, prompting the hospital to tell incoming patients to seek care at other emergency rooms.
Hospital officials said a boiler system failure caused the “emergency situation.” The Queensway health centre currently has no access to hot water, heat or steam.
St. Joseph’s has asked potential incoming patients to seek care at other hospitals in Toronto unless it is a life-threatening emergency.
“If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please seek care at an alternative hospital or contact your healthcare provider for guidance,” the hospital advised.
All non-essential activities at St. Joseph’s Health Centre have been cancelled today. This includes across all of the hospital’s ambulatory, procedural and surgical areas.
Patients who had scheduled appointments at the health centre will be contacted directly by their care team. However, people who are receiving dialysis or chemotherapy treatments will maintain their appointments.
“The health and safety of all our patients is a top priority and we are working to keep our buildings warm as possible as we resolve this issue,” a St. Joseph’s Health Centre spokesperson said.
