After 36 years serving up cold beer and grilled seafood to patrons on their popular patio, the owners of Amadeu's Restaurant in Kensington Market have announced the eatery's sudden closure.

In a social media post on Wednesday, the owners shared their thanks for the restaurant's "valued patrons and cherished staff."

"It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to an era that has been marked not only by exceptional culinary experiences but also by the relationships we have built along the way," the announcement reads.

Amadeu's owners — mother Celeste, daughter Elizabeth and son Rui Gonçalves — said they are filled with "gratitude and nostalgia" as they close the restaurant's doors.

With its Augusta Avenue address, the restaurant was situated just north of Bellevue Square Park.

The Gonçalves family did not reveal reasoning for closing the Portuguese restaurant, which first opened in 1989.

"To our loyal patrons, many of whom who have become more like family than customers, thank you for your unwavering support throughout the years," they wrote. "Your presence at our tables has brought warmth and joy to our establishment."

Next, the owners thanked the eatery's staff, both past and present.

"Your hard work, passion and commitment have been the heartbeat of Amadeu's," they said. "Together we have created not just meals, but memorable experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime."

The Gonçalves' said they feel saddened to say goodbye but are "forever grateful" for the loyalty shown from their patrons and community.

The closure has triggered a wave of support from the restaurant's patrons and fans, with many calling the eatery "legendary" and "a staple."

"One of my favorite places in the world. I wish I was in Toronto I'd come by for one last meal and a shot of Birão," one commenter wrote.

Another called Amadeu's a "cherished place" that is "a part of many people's history."

In a separate social media post, the owners said the restaurant was started by Celeste and her husband Amadeu.

"After Amadeu’s passing in 2008, Celeste, her son Rui and daughter Elizabeth kept the tradition alive within the family until the very end," the family wrote.

"This wasn’t just about being a Restaurant in the City of Toronto, but rather a Family within the Community of Kensington Market," they continued. "A place where people could come and feel like they were home away from home."
