If you have room in your heart — and your home — for a big dog, Toronto Animal Services has an offer you may not be able to refuse.

The city-run shelter service says large dogs can take longer to be adopted, which is why it is waiving adoption fees on canines over 50 pounds until Christmas Eve.

The offer also applies to puppies that would be expected to grow into large dogs as adults.

"Large breed dogs are often overlooked by potential adopters and stay in shelters approximately 1.5 times longer than other breeds," the city said.

The normal adoption fees for dogs are $185 for a male and $215 for a female.

Larger dogs available at the shelter on Thursday included two Doberman Pinscher and Cane Corso mixes who were brought to the shelter Aug. 16.

Other large dogs included two Siberian huskies, a German shepherd and Rottweiler mix, and a Labrador Retriever.

The shelter service said the adoption campaign and waived fees will end on Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 6:30 p.m., after which the fees will return to their regular price.

And if you're not sure about a big dog? As of Thursday the shelter also had a number of cats, guinea pigs and rabbits looking for a forever home, including English lop "Fiona" who has been at the shelter since June 16.
