Thousands of youngsters taking part in Toronto summer camps this year could benefit from a new food program that offers a nutritious snack every morning.
Registration for summer CampTO opens Wednesday, but today city officials celebrated a new snack program that would offer 31,000 kids healthy food at 45 camp locations across the city.
The nutrition initiative is part of the Mayor Olivia Chow's 2025 budget proposal, which will be considered by Toronto City Council on Feb. 11.
The proposed healthy snacks would be served mid-morning and are set to include a variety of healthy and nutritious foods.
"Kids should be focused on making friends and activities, not their grumbling tummies," Chow said, adding the camps are a way for kid's to enjoy arts, crafts, sports and create fun memories.
A variety of summer camps for children ages 4 to 16 are set to run in Toronto from early July to late August.
Program registration opens at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5. The city said the fastest and easiest way to sign up is online using the city’s new recreation and booking system.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to create an online account in advance of registration opening.
For anyone in need of registration help, several community centres will be open on Wednesday from 7 a.m. until noon.
