UPDATE: The City of Toronto said Monday evening that Ward's Island ferry service will resume its normal schedule on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.

Ferries to Toronto's Ward's Island are out of service today due to a buildup of ice in the harbour, the city announced.

The disruption first began on Sunday morning and the service has yet to resume.

"The captain ran a few safety trips this afternoon to determine the safety condition, unfortunately ice build up on the lake is still unsafe for transportation," the city said in a statement on Sunday.

Officials typically use a fire boat to break up ice and create a pathway for the ferry in similar weather conditions, though the boat is currently down for maintenance.

Bus service will run in place of the ferry, with transit operating from Billy Bishop Airport via a pedestrian tunnel to the mainland. The service commenced at 8 a.m. today, with one bus expected to run to and from the airport every hour.

The bus service will end at 9 p.m. tonight.

The City of Toronto has apologized for the inconvenience.
