Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Toronto.

The weather authority said bitter, freezing temperatures can be expected in the city tonight through to Wednesday morning.

Temperatures are expected to drop to near -30 C to as low as -35 C.

An Arctic air mass, also called a polar vortex, will bring very cold wind chills to the area tonight. Temperatures will likely moderate by Wednesday afternoon, according to Environment Canada.

Torontonians have been advised to stay out of the cold unless necessary.

Anyone who must travel in the cold weather should dress in warm, wind resistant clothing. They should also watch for cold-related symptoms including shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

It takes only minutes for frostbite to develop on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Locals have been encouraged to check on older family members, friends and neighbours who may need assistance during the extreme weather.

"If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside," Environment Canada advised.

The extreme cold warning was also issued for Mississauga and Brampton.
