Markus de Domenico (Ward 2 - Etobicoke) has been named the new chair of the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB).
He was first elected to the TCDSB in October 2018 and served as a trustee for six years before being elected vice-chair in December of last year.
Prior to 2018, de Domenico completely two terms as co-chair of the Father Serra Catholic School parent committee.
He came under fire earlier this year from Campaign Life Coalition — an anti-abortion advocacy group — for opposing a pro-life motion introduced by his colleague, Michael Del Grande. If passed, the motion would require all TCDSB schools to fly the international pro-life flag during the entirety of May.
Prior to the board meeting in April where trustees overwhelmingly rejected the motion, de Domenico told the Toronto Star he opposed the motion partly because the association with Campaign Life Coalition "really disturbs me — they’ve been nothing but very anti-Pride, anti-human rights code.”
De Domenico is an avid supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, sharing his support during Transgender Awareness Week and Pride Month.
Kevin Morrison (Ward 9 - Toronto) was elected the new vice-chair.
