Current students enroled in the programs will still have the opportunity to graduate, college says

A Toronto community college says it is suspending new enrolment in nearly 50 of its programs as it deals with a cap on international student enrolment imposed by the federal government.

"We’re making some changes to what programs will accept new students in the upcoming semesters," Centennial College said in a notice on its website.

"Current students enroled in these programs will still have the opportunity to graduate."

The programs being put on hold are mainly in the college's business studies, hospitality and tourism, and engineering technology departments.

The college, which has campuses in East York and Scarborough, said anyone who applied to one of the suspended programs will receive a communication letting them know of alternate programs they can apply to.

College president Craig Stephenson reportedly announced the move in a letter to staff on Tuesday.

It was unclear how many jobs are affected by the program suspensions.

Canada is reducing study permits by 10 per cent this year and next in response to concerns about temporary immigration and whether the current influx of students is negatively impacting the country's housing and labour markets.

Canada is still issuing 437,000 international student visas in 2025 and 2026. That’s down from the 485,000 it planned to approve in 2024.

The cap is expected to cost provincial governments — which control post secondary institutions — billions in tuition fees as students from abroad pay much higher rates to attend school in Canada than domestic students.

Centennial College was the first community college established in Ontario and gets its name from the country's 1967 centennial year or 100th birthday.

The college has five campuses and seven satellite locations across the GTA.
