A woman has died from her injuries after a vehicle plunged into the water at Ashbridges Bay on Sunday night.

The woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after police conducted a marine rescue for the occupants of the vehicle. Toronto police confirmed to TorontoToday that the “female passenger was pronounced deceased this morning.”

A male victim, who was the other occupant of the vehicle, was also transported to the hospital Sunday night. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No update has been given on his condition.

Police rushed to the scene near Ashbridges Bay Park Road after receiving reports of a vehicle submerged in the water with two people inside.

When police arrived, one person had managed to get out of the vehicle themselves and authorities were later able to remove the remaining person.

Toronto police spokesperson Viktor Sarudi said officers who were first on the scene “entered the freezing water to begin a rescue attempt,” but were unable to reach the passenger. A police marine unit took over and removed the passenger from the car.

Four officers were hospitalized due to their exposure to the elements but have since been released, Sarudi told TorontoToday

The vehicle that went into the water has since been removed from Ashbridges Bay, but the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police did share details about how the vehicle ended up in the water.
