A pedestrian has died in hospital after they were struck by a Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) bus near Bloor Street and Ossington Avenue on Tuesday night, police reported.
The Toronto Police Service (TPS) said the collision occurred around 8:30 p.m.
The man who was struck by the TTC bus sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a trauma centre where he later died, TPS said.
In an update Wednesday afternoon, TPS said the man was struck by a TTC bus that was making a right turn to go south on Ossington Avenue.
The man was pinned under the front side of the bus, police said.
Authorities have not yet identified the victim but said he was a 55-year-old who had just exited Ossington subway station.
TPS is requesting the public's help in identifying the man, who has been described as Asian, approximately 5'4" and weighing about 176 pounds. He was wearing green camouflaged pants, a dark coloured winter jacket and a brown toque, police described.
In a statement posted to social media, TTC CEO Greg Percy said "there was a tragic, fatal incident involving a TTC customer and one of our buses outside Ossington Station."
"On behalf of the TTC, I extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased," he said. "Our thoughts are also with the bus operator who was involved."
Percy said the bus driver will be provided support and assistance as they require.
"Incidents like this, while rare, are difficult for everyone," Percy continued. "They serve as a reminder of why we treat the safety and security of our customers and employees as our top priorities."
He said the TTC is collaborating with TPS as they continue to investigate the fatal collision.
"We will also take away any learnings we can to make sure the TTC is the safest it can be," Percy concluded.
