The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is warning of a telephone scam that is spoofing a real police division telephone number.

Police have received several reports of phone calls from someone identifying themselves as being from the TPS and requesting personal information.

Police said the caller ID appears as the phone number 416-808-3300, which is the number for 33 Division.

"However these calls do not originate from the TPS," police said in a release.

The caller goes on to say they are investigating fraudulent activity and tells the victim to contact Chinese authorities.

"It is believed that the suspect is attempting to obtain personal information from the victim for fraudulent purposes," police said.

If you get a phone call from someone identifying themselves as a police officer, police advised that you obtain their name and badge number then call back to confirm it was a legitimate call.

"Never provide personal information to an unknown person over the phone," police said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact police at 416-808-3300, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or www.222tips.com.
