The Toronto Police Service (TPS) says two men have been arrested and charged after a smoke canister was set off inside Union Station early New Year's Day during a protest.

Police say at 1:10 a.m. on Jan. 1, officers were on scene of a demonstration at Union Station.

Police said a group of protestors was demonstrating inside the building when two of the protestors discharged a smoke canister.

The station started to fill with smoke, causing safety concerns, police said in a news release.

On Friday, Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad, 31, of Mississauga, and Nabil Suheil Jalbout, 24, of Burlington, were arrested and charged with one count each of mischief — interfere with the lawful use of property.

They are both scheduled to attend at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury St. on Feb. 20, 20.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent until proven guilty.
