The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) and police services that patrol the roads and highways in Toronto will launch an initiative Tuesday morning aimed at getting drivers ready for ice and snow-covered streets.

The Toronto Police traffic services unit, in partnership with Ontario Provincial Police, will be on hand for the annual CAA South Central Ontario winter readiness campaign launch at the east collision reporting centre at 39 Howden Rd.

Police said the event will encourage drivers to make sure their vehicles are in overall good working condition, including checking batteries and installing winter tires as the cold weather approaches.

While the age-old debate about whether Toronto drivers actually need winter tires continues, CAA offered several tips to keep in mind before hitting the road, including:

  • Slow down and move over for emergency vehicles
  • Never pass a snowplow
  • Avoid using overdrive or cruise control
  • Practice emergency braking to understand how your vehicle will react
  • Check the weather forecast ahead of time
  • Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead
  • Stay on main roads
  • Keep a phone charger in your car

Drivers can also receive a discount on their car insurance if they use snow tires. If you insure with CAA, the tires must be installed no later than Nov. 20 and must be kept on until April 15.
