Ontario’s police watchdog has charged a Toronto police officer with aggravated assault after a man was seriously injured during an arrest last summer.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) on Aug. 3, 2024, officers were making an arrest in the area of Victoria Street Lane and Dundas Street East when a man — who was not the one being arrested — was injured. The man was then taken to hospital and diagnosed with serious injuries.
As a result of an SIU investigation, Det. Const Christian Campoli has been charged with one count of aggravated assault.
The SIU said Campoli is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 10 Armoury Street in Toronto on March 18, 2025.
As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU said they will not provide further comment on the investigation.
The SIU is an independent provincial agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
