The Toronto Police Service (TPS) has released the identity of a four-month-old baby who died in a midtown apartment building in Toronto last week.
TPS revealed the baby's name, Azuri Bacchas, on Wednesday when a publication ban was lifted.
The infant's identity was revealed two days after the child's mother, Karessa Edwards, was charged with second-degree murder.
Edwards, 30, was last week charged with failure to provide the necessaries of life, though this charge was changed following an upgrade.
Bacchas was first reported missing by the child’s father at around 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 20 from an apartment on Roselawn and Marlee avenues.
TPS said officers arrived at a midtown apartment and discovered the infant in need of life saving care. Though officers provided first aid at the scene, the infant later died in hospital.
The Toronto Star reported the infant was discovered in a garbage room on the building's first floor. Police told the outlet it is believed the four-month-old went down the building’s garbage chute.
Edwards remains in police custody.
The homicide and missing persons unit is continuing to monitor the investigation.
None of the allegations against Edwards have been tested in court and she is considered innocent until proven guilty.
