Toronto police are searching for a suspect, or suspects, accused of shooting two people in a tow yard near Weston Road and St Clair Avenue West on Tuesday night.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m.

On Wednesday morning, police said one of the two victims, identified only as a man in his 50's, remains in life-threatening condition.

The second victim, a man in his 20's, sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Both men were taken to hospital on Tuesday night.

Police said the suspect, or suspects, fled the scene in a dark sedan.

It is so far unclear what preempted the shooting or if a motive was involved.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who may have information in the case has been asked to contact police.

Violence in the tow truck industry

It is unclear if Tuesday's violence is connected to a recent surge of shooting incidences within the tow truck industry

Police in January announced the launch of Project Dodger, a dedicated team of officers who will tackle criminality associated with a "small group of bad actors" within the industry.

The initiative was created as police reported 63 incidents of gunfire in 2024 related to violence in the towing industry. A TPS spokesperson said the occurrences accounted for nearly 13 per cent of all shootings in the city last year.

In January, Toronto police said officers were investigating three tow-truck related shootings that occurred in the GTA within 24 hours.

On Jan. 9, officers responded to two towing related shootings in Scarborough, which saw three people injured. The day before, a man in his 20s was also shot and sustained serious injuries in similar circumstances in Scarborough.

However, police specified most operators and tow companies abide by the law and comply with the provincial regulations under the Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act. Police said most tow companies play "an essential role in maintaining road safety."
