The names of a new Island and surrounding park in the Port Lands will be unveiled Friday after a "robust" naming process in partnership with Indigenous communities, the city says.
Elder Shelley Charles and members of an Indigenous advisory circle will join Mayor Olivia Chow and Councillor Paula Fletcher (Toronto–Danforth) for the big reveal.
The new island was created as part of an extensive Port Lands flood protection project, the city said.
The work re-naturalized the mouth of the Don River over six years of construction.
The city said the naming process for the area previously known as Villiers Island was directed by council and led by an advisory circle including elders and knowledge keepers.
