As the holiday festivities fade into the rearview mirror, many Torontonians are sure to be wondering what to do with their Christmas trees

The City of Toronto will pick up Christmas trees on regularly scheduled garbage collection days in January.

In order to have your tree picked up from the curb, it must have all of the lights, tinsel and decorations removed. It should not be bagged or attached to a stand or skirt.

Locals looking to dispose of their tree should place it next to their garbage bin and ensure it is free of snow and ice.

Christmas trees that are not collected on designated days in January must be put out for yard waste pickup when that collection resumes in the spring.

Artificial trees should be taken apart and, if possible, set out as an oversized item on garbage collection day, the city said.

Otherwise, real and artificial Christmas trees can be taken to a drop-off depot in the city.

For apartment and condo dwellers, the city said tenants in multi-residential buildings should speak to the property manager for instructions on how to dispose of a tree.

The City of Toronto maintains a full list of seasonal impacts to garbage collection and drop-off depots on its website
