A new outdoor winter market is coming to downtown's St. Lawrence Market, promising locals a fresh option for Christmas shopping or just enjoying the season.

The winter market will take place every Thursday to Sunday starting Dec. 5. The holiday market will close shop after Christmas.

The City of Toronto said the free to attend market will feature artisanal goods and entertainment for guests who stop by.

"Visitors can explore a curated selection of local vendors offering one-of-a-kind gifts, specialty products and seasonal food and drinks," the city said in a release. "Whether visitors are searching for the perfect holiday present or simply looking to soak in the seasonal atmosphere, the Winter Market creates the ideal setting for a festive outing with friends and family."

The new market is designed to invigorate the pedestrianized Market Street, which spans from Front Street to The Esplanade. The area will remain closed to vehicles through December, so pedestrian shoppers should have plenty of space to explore.

Highlights of the St. Lawrence winter market include:

  • Free photos with Santa on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., where visitors are invited to bring a new toy, non-perishable food item or cash donation to support those in need.
  • A weekly rotating lineup of local artisans and vendors.
  • A daily lineup of free outdoor performances including a mix of live opera and jazz musicians, Christmas carollers and more seasonal acts.

A complete list of entertainment options at the winter market can be found on the St. Lawrence Market website.

Serving the city since 1803, St. Lawrence Market's food hall regularly features 120 merchants, vendors and farmers who offer produce, meats and specialty items to hungry and curious visitors.

The market complex consists of St. Lawrence Hall as well as the South and North Markets which have temporary homes at 125 The Esplanade.
