A much-anticipated Canadian film about trying to play a concert on Queen Street West will get a world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas in March.
SXSW revealed its Film & TV Festival line up this month, which includes “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” an upcoming film written and directed by Toronto’s Matt Johnson.
The film is a follow-up to Johnson and his co-writer Jay McCarrol’s TV series “Nirvanna the Band the Show,” a cult favourite that aired on Viceland in 2017-18. (The show itself was based on an earlier web series.)
In the show, Johnson and McCarrol play fictional versions of themselves as goofy would-be bandmates. The pair go to great (and unnecessary) lengths to try to book a concert at the Rivoli on Queen Street West.
The Globe and Mail first reported on the film’s development in May 2023 when Johnson was promoting “Blackberry.”
SXSW takes place from March 7 to 15. Another 11 Canadian film and television shows will be showcased at the festival.
