Do you love being the first to see new movies? If so, here are some of the films opening in Toronto this weekend.
A Complete Unknown
Set in the New York City music scene of the early '60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan (played by Timothée Chalamet) during his rise to fame as a chart topping folk singer. The film culminates in an electric rock 'n' roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Early access screenings are on now at the Yonge-Dundas Cineplex.
Mufasa: The Lion King
In Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King, Rafiki relays the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion who is heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny. Their bonds are tested as they work together to evade a deadly foe. Downtown theatres carrying Mufasa include the Yonge-Dundas Cineplex and the Imagine Cinemas Market Square on Jarvis Street.
Oh, Canada
Richard Gere plays Leonard Fife, who left the U.S. for Canada as a young man during the Vietnam War draft and became an acclaimed documentary filmmaker in Montréal. Now riddled with illness and palliative medicine, he allows former film students to interview him. Uma Thurman, playing Fife’s watchful wife, Emma, stands guard to protect her husband’s legacy. But as Fife’s memories come to life in flashbacks, the great man’s official story fractures. Oh, Canada is playing at Imagine Cinemas Carlton.
The Count of Monte-Cristo
In The Count of Monte-Cristo, a prison escapee wrongly accused of treason seeks revenge on those who betrayed him in this adaptation of the famed novel. The film follows the tragic tale of Edmond Dantès (played by Pierre Niney), a young and promising sailor who is imprisoned in the dreaded Château d’If. After years of enduring unimaginable hardship, he escapes and reinvents himself as a mysterious and wealthy count. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and was met with critical acclaim. This France-Belgium production is on at TIFF Lightbox.
Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
In Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Gromit's concern that Wallace has become over-dependent on his inventions proves justified when Wallace invents a smart gnome that appears to develop a mind of its own. Catch this animated comedy from the U.K. this weekend at TIFF Lightbox.
Sonic The Hedgehog: 3
In Sonic the Hedgehog: 3, Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, who has powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
