Toronto's Kensington Market neighbourhood will be flooded with festive locals on Saturday to celebrate the 35th annual Winter Solstice Street Festival.

The one-day street festival is known to draw large crowds of about 5,000 people to the heart of the neighbourhood.

As a result, the Toronto Police Service said the majority of Kensington Market will be closed to motorists from Augusta Avenue northbound to College Street beginning at 5 p.m. The roads will reopen at approximately 10 p.m. that evening, when the festival concludes.

Drivers in the area can expect significant delays and should consider alternate methods of transportation.

Festivities begin at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Augusta Avenue and Oxford Street, regardless of weather conditions.

The festival, which first began in 1988, occurs on the eve of the winter solstice when the sun appears at its lowest point in the sky, marking the shortest day of the year.

Eventgoers can expect street theatre and busker performances, music, art and dancing.
