No one quite understands what their cat does all day. "We just know it’s important."
So say artists Zack Rosen and Gillian Lahav, whose cat-themed works are on display until Tuesday at a Roncesvalles Avenue art gallery in an exhibit dubbed "The Cat Show."
The artists said part of the inspiration behind their subject matter is that cats "understand our emotional needs."
"Cats live in our homes, our front yards, our woodlands and our dreams. Their movement between these spaces — the private, the public, the wild, and the cosmic — is the subject of the works you see here," the artists share in a message to visitors checking out their feline-inspired paintings on display at Northern Contemporary Gallery.
In Lahav’s paintings, cats nap in bright spaces. The artist said her work is inspired by big cats in the wild and her own house panthers.
Rosen’s work marvels at Toronto, "this city of cats," where every stoop and porch has its own feline greeter.
"Halfway between our living rooms and avenues, these guardian cats stand at the border of that which can be seen and that which can only be imagined."
The appreciation of cats big and small can be seen at the gallery at 420 Roncesvalles Ave.
The show held its opening reception Thursday and continues until Nov. 26.
There will be an artists’ talk on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m.
